Aru Valley is about 12 km from Pahalgam town, a half-day trip by local taxi from Hotel Sparrow in Kullar. The road follows the Aru stream through villages to a wide meadow ringed by pines. Staying in Kullar lets you do Aru one day and Betaab and Chandanwari the next.
Drive time and road condition
Aru Valley is about 12 km from Pahalgam town, in the opposite direction from Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. The road runs alongside the Aru stream, climbing gently past wooden village houses and walnut trees before the meadow opens up. It is narrow in places, so local drivers who know it are the safest option.
We are measuring exact drive times from the hotel across the seasons. Until then, call us on the day and we will tell you how long the trip is taking, because traffic and weather change it.
What to expect
Aru is the least commercial of Pahalgam's valleys, which is exactly why people love it. Expect open meadows, pine forest, a small village, ponies for hire and simple tea stalls. It is also the starting point for treks to Lidderwat, the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Marsar.
Allow a half day for the meadow, longer if you want to walk. Our Aru and Betaab guide and beginner's guide to treks near Pahalgam have more detail.
Taxi arrangements
Day trips to Aru have generally been run by Pahalgam's local taxi union, and the rules for outside cabs have changed over time. Our front desk books them for you and can tell you the current fixed fare. Agree on waiting time before you leave, so you can walk the meadow without watching the clock.
Best season
- Spring (April to June): green meadows, flowers and mild days.
- Summer (July to August): busiest and greenest; book taxis early.
- Autumn (September to November): golden colours and clear skies.
- Winter (December to February): usually under snow, very still and very cold; go in the late morning once the sun is up, and check the road first.
Our winter stay page covers snow, road access and what to pack.
A day plan: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari
If you have two days, split it: Aru one morning, and Betaab Valley with Chandanwari the next. If you have only one day, this plan works in good weather:
- 8 AM: breakfast at the hotel, then leave for Aru while it is quiet.
- 8:30 to 11:30 AM: walk the meadow and the village.
- Midday: back through Pahalgam for lunch in town.
- 1:30 to 5 PM: Betaab Valley, then on to Chandanwari if the road is open.
- Evening: back in Kullar for dinner, which is included in our room rates.
