Aru Valley and Betaab Valley: Two Easy Day Trips from Pahalgam

March 9, 2026 · 4 min read

Quick answer

Aru Valley (about 12 km from Pahalgam) is a meadow-and-pine village that doubles as a trekking base. Betaab Valley is a forested, river-cut valley made famous by a Bollywood film. Both are easy to visit by taxi in a day, April to October is the best window, and a hotel in Kullar, Pahalgam puts you close to both.

Most people reach Pahalgam with a long list in mind, then find that two names keep coming up in every conversation: Aru Valley and Betaab Valley. After a few seasons of watching our guests come back from them with muddy shoes and full camera rolls, we get why.

We're Hotel Sparrow, a mountain-view hotel in Kullar, just outside the bustle of Pahalgam's central market. Here's how we'd plan these two valleys if a friend asked us.

Why these two valleys belong on your Pahalgam list

They look nothing alike, and that's the point. Aru feels open and pastoral. Betaab feels enclosed, green and a little dramatic. Seeing one without the other is like reading half a book. Together they fill a relaxed day, with time left for tea on a terrace in the evening.

Aru Valley: meadows, shepherd huts and a trekker's starting line

Aru Valley is roughly 12 km from Pahalgam. The road follows the Aru stream and climbs gently through villages and walnut trees. Then the landscape opens into a wide meadow ringed by pine forest, with a small village at its heart.

For trekkers, Aru is the doorway to bigger adventures. Routes lead toward Kolahoi Glacier and on to the high lakes of Tarsar and Marsar. But you don't need hiking boots to enjoy it. Plenty of visitors simply walk the meadow edges, sit near the stream and watch shepherd huts dot the hillsides much as they have for generations.

Our tip: Go in the morning. The light is softer, the meadow is quieter and the mountains are usually clearer before afternoon clouds drift in.

Betaab Valley: a gorge with a film-star name

Betaab Valley has a slightly different mood. Dense pine forest rises on both sides, and a fast glacial stream cuts through the middle. In places the valley narrows into a gorge, and once you're inside, the walking is easy and mostly flat.

The valley takes its present name from the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab, shot here. The name stuck, and today it's what maps and taxi drivers call it. It suits families, couples and older travellers who want something scenic without a steep climb.

Our tip: Carry a light jacket even in summer. The shade under the pines and the cold water make it noticeably cooler than the road.

Chandanwari: easy to combine with Betaab

Chandanwari lies further along the same route as Betaab Valley. It's the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage route and the Sheshnag trek. Many travellers fold it into the Betaab outing, which makes for a satisfying second half of the day.

When is the best time to visit?

April to October is the comfortable window. Spring brings fresh green meadows, summer is lively and pleasant, and early autumn is calm with crisp air. Heavy snow can close approach roads in winter, so check conditions with your hotel or driver first.

If you're travelling between May and August, book your stay early. Those are the busiest months for hotels in Pahalgam.
