Srinagar to Pahalgam by Road: Distance, Time, Route and Taxi Tips

October 19, 2026 · 7 min read

Almost every guest asks us the same thing before they arrive: how do I get from Srinagar to Pahalgam, and how long will it take? It is a fair question. Pahalgam has no airport or railway station, so nearly everyone lands in Srinagar and finishes the journey by road. The drive is easy and scenic, but a few details about the route, the timing and how taxis work in the valley can save you hours and money. This guide covers all of it, written from Kullar, just outside Pahalgam's main market.

How Far Is Srinagar From Pahalgam?

The road distance is roughly 90 to 100 km. You will see different numbers online because “Srinagar” is a big place: leaving from Dal Lake, the airport or Pantha Chowk changes the total by several kilometres. For planning, 95 km is a safe average.

DetailAnswer
Road distanceAbout 90–100 km (95 km on average)

Why does 95 km take close to three hours? The first half is a busy national highway through towns, and the second half is a mostly two-lane valley road that climbs gradually towards Pahalgam. Average speeds stay modest, which is no bad thing on a drive this good to look at.

The Route, Stop by Stop

You can follow this route without a map, but it helps to know what each stretch is like.

  • Srinagar to Pampore (about 12 km). You leave the city heading south on NH44. Morning traffic is the main slowdown here.
  • Pampore to Awantipora (about 15 km). A flat, fast stretch across the saffron-growing plateau.
  • Awantipora to Bijbehara (about 15 km). Small market towns and chinar trees along the roadside.
  • Bijbehara to Anantnag (about 8 km). Anantnag is South Kashmir's main town and your last big stop for fuel, food and cash.
  • Anantnag to Mattan. You leave the main highway and follow the road signed for Pahalgam. Road quality is a mix of good and average.
  • Mattan to Aishmuqam. Orchards and villages, then the Lidder river starts keeping you company as the valley narrows.
  • Aishmuqam to Pahalgam. Pine forest, river and mountain views for the final stretch. Kullar, where Hotel Sparrow sits, is a short drive from the main market.

From Anantnag, Pahalgam is roughly 40 to 45 km further, so plan on about an hour for that last section.

Worth a Stop on the Way

You do not need to rush. These stops fit neatly into the drive:

  • Pampore saffron fields: the crocus bloom usually peaks from late October to mid-November, when the fields turn purple. Outside those weeks the fields are bare, so do not expect flowers in summer.
  • Awantipora temple ruins: the remains of two 9th-century temples associated with King Avantivarman, right beside the highway.
  • Bijbehara: a town known for Kashmir willow cricket bats, where workshops often let visitors watch bats being made.
  • Martand Sun Temple, Mattan: an 8th-century ruin attributed to the Karkota dynasty, with a large colonnaded courtyard and a mountain backdrop.

Even a 20-minute stop breaks up the drive nicely.

What Affects Your Travel Time

  • Time of departure. Leave Srinagar before 9 am. City traffic and Anantnag's market crowds build up later in the day.
  • Season. Heavy winter snow can slow traffic or briefly pause it. In the Amarnath Yatra months (usually July and August), expect more vehicles and security movement on the road.
  • Road work and checkpoints. Short delays are normal.
  • Photo stops. The approach to Pahalgam is hard to drive past without one.

Add a 45-minute buffer to your plan, and try to reach Pahalgam before dark. The hill section is easier and safer in daylight.

Taxi Tips That Save Money and Stress

  • Get the total fare in writing. Ask whether tolls, parking, waiting time and luggage are included.
  • Know one-way from round trip. A one-way drop is usually cheaper than paying for the driver's return.
  • Choose the vehicle by luggage, not just headcount. A sedan suits three adults with light bags. Families with big suitcases are more comfortable in an SUV.
  • Pre-book airport pick-ups. Flights land at all hours, and a confirmed driver saves you negotiating at arrivals.
  • Ask about local sightseeing separately. Day trips to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari have generally been run by Pahalgam's local taxi union, and the rules for outside cabs have changed over time. Check whether your Srinagar driver can take you beyond town.
  • Share the driver's name, number and vehicle plate with someone at home.
  • Carry a government photo ID. Security checks are routine on the highway.

Before You Leave Srinagar

  • Mobile network. Prepaid SIM cards bought outside Jammu and Kashmir generally do not work in Kashmir. Postpaid connections do, and tourists can also buy a local J&K SIM. Sort this out before you start driving, because coverage can dip in parts of the valley.
  • Cash. Keep some for small shops, tea stalls and tips.
  • Weather and road status. Check the forecast on the morning you travel, especially between December and March.
  • Open sights. Access to some places around Pahalgam, including Baisaran and Chandanwari, has been restricted at times in 2026. Confirm what is open with us before you plan day trips.
  • Warm layers. Pahalgam sits at about 2,130 metres and feels noticeably cooler than Srinagar, even in summer.
