Three days is the sweet spot for Pahalgam. It is long enough to see the main valleys without rushing, and short enough that you won't run out of things to do. This plan assumes you are staying in Kullar, a short drive from the central market, and it leaves room for the part many visitors skip: sitting still and looking at the mountains.

Treat it as a template, not a rulebook. Weather, road conditions and your own energy will shape the real days.

How Pahalgam's geography shapes your plan

Pahalgam sits on the Lidder River at roughly 2,100 to 2,200 metres, depending on which source you check. According to Wikipedia's entry on Pahalgam, the valley splits at the town: one arm runs northeast towards Amarnath, the other northwest towards Aru.

That one detail makes planning easy. Betaab Valley and Chandanwari lie along the same road, while Aru Valley is on the opposite side of town. So the natural split is Betaab plus Chandanwari on one day, and Aru on another. Distances vary a little between sources, but expect roughly 7 to 8 km to Betaab, about 12 km to Aru and 15 to 16 km to Chandanwari.

Day 1: Arrive, settle in and walk to the river

Most guests reach us from Srinagar after a drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours. Our guide to Srinagar to Pahalgam by road covers the route and taxi tips, and if you are coming from further away, how to reach Pahalgam from Delhi, Mumbai and other cities will help.

Keep the first afternoon light. Check in, ask for a mountain-facing room if you would like one, and rest. Around sunset, walk down to the Lidder. The Incredible India page on the Lidder River describes a river that runs about 73 km from the Kolahoi Glacier to the Jhelum, and the stretch near town is flat, easy walking after a long journey.

Dinner at the hotel runs from 8:00 to 10:30 PM. If you would like help ordering, our guide to Kashmiri wazwan and kahwa explains what is on the table.

Day 2: Betaab Valley and Chandanwari

Start by 8:30 or 9:00 AM. The roads are quieter, the light is softer and you beat the busiest part of the day.

Betaab Valley comes first. It was named after the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here, and today it is a tidy meadow beside the river. It suits picnics, photographs and slow walks, and it is easy going for children and older relatives. A small entry fee has been reported in the past, so keep some change handy.

Continue to Chandanwari, the starting point of the annual Amarnath Yatra. It sits higher than town, so it is noticeably colder, even in summer. In peak yatra months access can be controlled, and after heavy snow the road may close, so check with our front desk before you set off. On the way back, ask your driver to pause where the river and pines look best. The drive is half the pleasure.

Day 3: Aru Valley and a slow afternoon

Aru Valley lies in the opposite direction, about 12 km from town along the West Lidder. It is quieter and more open than Betaab, with wide meadows and the feel of a trekking base. Give it a relaxed morning. Our guide to Aru Valley and Betaab Valley has timings and seasonal notes.

Return for a late lunch, then leave the afternoon unplanned. Walk through the market, pick up some walnuts or dry fruit, and finish with a cup of kahwa on the terrace if the weather is kind. That last cup tends to be the one people remember.

Practical tips for this itinerary

  • Transport: Sightseeing taxis here generally run through the local taxi union. Our front desk can help arrange transport, and it is wise to confirm the fare before you leave.
  • Layers: Mornings and evenings are cool even in summer. In snow season, read our guide to Pahalgam in winter.
  • Phone and cash: Mobile signal and digital payments can be patchy in the valleys. Our Pahalgam trip checklist covers what to sort before you arrive.
  • Short on time? Two days works if you start early and combine Aru with an afternoon outing, though you will be moving faster. For the best months, see when to visit Pahalgam.
