How to reach Betaab Valley from Kullar
Betaab Valley is a short drive from Hotel Sparrow, along the Lidder on the Pahalgam to Chandanwari road. Sightseeing trips to the valleys generally run through Pahalgam's local taxi union, and the rules for outside cabs have changed over time; our front desk books a cab for you and can tell you the current fare.
Drive times vary with traffic, and in July and August the Amarnath Yatra adds checkpoints on this road. Ask us on the day and we will give you a realistic time.
The best hours to visit
Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The valley is usually busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon, so an early start gives you the meadow, the stream and the light with fewer people around. Mornings are also when the peaks are most likely to be clear for photos.
- Morning (8 to 10 AM): quietest, clearest light, cool air.
- Midday: busiest, especially on weekends and in summer.
- Late afternoon: softer light and fewer people; carry a layer as it cools fast.
What to see nearby
Betaab is a forested valley with a fast glacial stream cutting through flat meadows, which is why it suits families, couples and older travellers who want scenery without a climb. It took its name from the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here.
Most guests carry on up the same road to Chandanwari, about 16 km from town at roughly 2,900 metres, where patches of snow often linger. Together they make an easy full day. Our Aru and Betaab guide and the places to visit near Pahalgam page have more detail.
Betaab Valley in winter
In winter Betaab usually turns white, with the stream running dark between snowbanks. It can be beautiful, but after a heavy snowfall the road may not be cleared for a while, so decide on the morning rather than the night before. Our winter stay page covers road access and what to pack.
Where to eat
Food near the valley is simple, mostly tea and snacks in season. Most of our guests have breakfast at the hotel before they leave and come back for dinner, which is included in our room rates. Our restaurant serves Kashmiri, Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes; see the dining page.
