Snow usually reaches Pahalgam in mid to late December, and January is typically the snowiest month. When does it snow in Pahalgam?
Snow in Pahalgam typically begins in mid to late December, and January is usually the peak. It can stay on the ground into February, and the higher valleys hold it for longer. Every winter is different, so treat these months as the usual window rather than a promise, and keep a day or two of flexibility if snow is the reason for your trip.
Pahalgam sits at about 2,200 metres in the Lidder Valley. Days are often bright and clear, while mornings and nights are well below freezing. For a month-by-month picture of the whole year, see our season-by-season guide to visiting Pahalgam.
How warm are the rooms?
Tell us you are travelling in winter when you book, and we will confirm how your room is heated, whether there is any charge for it, how hot water works and what power backup is in place on your dates. Our team will answer plainly, because a cold room is the one thing that can spoil a snowy trip.
When you enquire, it helps to ask these four questions:
- Heating: what type is in the room, and is it included in the rate or charged separately?
- Hot water: is it available around the clock in the ensuite bathroom?
- Power backup: what happens if the power goes out after a heavy snowfall?
- Extra bedding: can you have an extra blanket on very cold nights?
Every room has its own ensuite bathroom, so there are no corridor walks on cold mornings. Hot food helps too: our ground-floor restaurant serves Kashmiri, Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes, with a pot of kahwa never far away. See the restaurant.

Getting here in winter
Pahalgam is about 90 km from Srinagar, and the drive normally takes 2.5 to 3 hours, longer in snow. Plan to arrive in daylight. If your flight lands late in the afternoon, stay a night in Srinagar and drive up the next morning; ice on shaded bends after dark is the biggest risk on this road.
- Check the road on the day. The highway can close for a time after heavy snowfall. Check the status before you leave Srinagar and call our front desk on +91 8803929292 for local conditions.
- Book a winter-ready taxi. In past winters, local advisories have recommended 4x4 vehicles and anti-skid chains. Ask us to help arrange a local driver, and ask for a vehicle with chains. Check the current advisory before you travel.
- Do not drive at night after snowfall. Advisories have also warned against night travel after fresh snow. Your driver will know which stretches freeze first.
- Leave a spare day. Weather can delay you on the way in or out, so avoid booking a flight home on the same day you leave Pahalgam.
What if the road closes?
Call us first on +91 8803929292 or 0194-2502322. Our 24-hour front desk will tell you what we are hearing locally and help you plan around it, whether that means waiting a few hours in Srinagar or moving your arrival by a day. Our guide to Srinagar to Pahalgam by road covers the route, stops and taxi tips in detail.

What to pack
Layers matter more than one heavy coat. Here is the short list our winter guests rely on:
- Thermal base layers, top and bottom
- A fleece or woollen mid-layer, plus a padded or down jacket
- Waterproof boots with good grip, and spare warm socks
- Gloves, a woollen cap and a scarf
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, because glare off snow is strong
- Lip balm and moisturiser for the dry air
- A power bank, because cold drains phone batteries quickly
- Any regular medicines, and a small bag for wet gloves and socks
For ID, cash and mobile network tips, see our Pahalgam trip checklist.
What to do in Pahalgam in winter
Winter here is about slow days: quiet walks through Kullar, the Lidder running between snowy banks, pines bent under fresh snow and long evenings with a hot drink. Photographers love the first hours after sunrise, when the sky is clearest.
Which places you can reach depends on the day's conditions. After a heavy fall, roads to the higher spots can close for a while, so decide on the morning, not the night before. Our front desk and your driver will know what is open.
- Betaab Valley sits on the Chandanwari road. Under snow its meadow turns white and the stream runs dark between the drifts. See hotels near Betaab Valley for the route.
- Aru Valley is about 12 km from town in the other direction, a quiet meadow below sharp peaks. In winter it is very still and very cold, so go in the late morning once the sun is up. See Aru Valley day trips.
- Chandanwari is the road's end at about 2,900 metres and often holds snow the longest. It is also the first road to close, so treat it as a bonus, not the plan.
- The Lidder and Kullar need no road at all. Walk the river path and the village lanes, then warm up with kahwa on the terrace.
