Most Pahalgam trips go smoothly. The ones that don't usually trip over small, avoidable things: a SIM card that won't connect, no cash for a roadside stop, or the wrong layer for the weather. This checklist covers the practical side of getting ready, so the only thing you have to think about once you arrive is the view.

Documents to carry

Bring original photo ID for every adult in your group. Indian guests can carry an Aadhaar card, passport or driving licence, and international guests should carry a passport with a valid visa. Hotels will ask for ID at check-in, and a SIM purchase in Jammu and Kashmir needs it too.

Keep your booking confirmations, taxi details and our phone number saved offline, because signal can drop in the valleys. A photo of each ID on your phone is a useful backup, though it does not replace the original. If anyone takes regular medicines, carry the prescription as well.

Phone and mobile network

This is the item that catches the most visitors. A prepaid SIM bought outside Jammu and Kashmir often does not work for roaming inside the region. A travel operator's guide to SIM cards in Kashmir notes that Airtel's prepaid terms state roaming benefits do not apply to customers visiting J&K, and it advises against relying on an out-of-state prepaid connection. Postpaid connections generally work, and local prepaid SIMs are available inside the region once you complete KYC with original ID.

Offers and rules change, so call your operator before you travel and ask directly. If you need a local SIM, buy it from an official store rather than a roadside seller, because a SIM registered to someone else can stop working mid-trip. Download offline maps for Pahalgam and Srinagar before you leave.

Money

Carry a mix of digital payments and cash. Larger places usually accept cards and UPI, but small stops such as roadside tea, parking, pony rides or entry tickets at spots like Betaab Valley often prefer cash, and weak signal can make apps unreliable. Withdraw a sensible amount before the drive up rather than assuming you will find it on the way. Keep small notes handy, because change is not always available.

Packing by season

Our season-by-season guide explains what each part of the year feels like. In short:

  • April to June: light layers, a fleece for evenings and comfortable walking shoes. Meadows are green and mornings are cool.
  • July and August: a rain jacket and shoes with grip. This is peak season, so book early.
  • September and October: warm layers for clear, cold mornings and evenings.
  • Late December to February: full winter gear. See our guide to Pahalgam in winter for a detailed packing list.

Across every season, a power bank, sunscreen, sunglasses and a small day bag will earn their place.

Health and comfort

The drive from Srinagar takes about 2.5 to 3 hours on winding roads, so carry motion-sickness tablets if anyone is prone to it. Bring a basic kit with pain relief, plasters, antiseptic and any regular medicines. Drink plenty of water, especially if you are walking. Pahalgam sits around 2,100 to 2,200 metres, which is comfortable for most people, though anyone with heart or lung conditions should check with a doctor first. Our family guide to Pahalgam goes deeper on pacing for children and older relatives.

Booking and transport

May to August is the busiest period for hotels in Pahalgam, so reserve your room early. When you book, confirm your arrival time, whether you would like a mountain-facing room and whether you need help with local transport for sightseeing. Our front desk can arrange taxis for day trips, and it helps to agree the plan the evening before. If you are still working out the route, our guide to Srinagar to Pahalgam by road is a good place to start, and our 3-day itinerary shows how to use your time.
