Ask a local where the best walking in Kashmir starts and there is a good chance they will point up the Lidder Valley. Pahalgam is the gateway to some of the most loved trails in the region, from gentle riverside strolls to multi-day treks to glaciers and alpine lakes. If you are new to trekking, though, the choice can feel overwhelming. This guide sorts out where to begin, what the main treks involve and how to plan treks near Pahalgam without biting off too much.

Start with walks, not treks

Before you commit to a camping trip, try the easy stuff. The path along the Lidder River is flat and free. Betaab Valley has level paths through pine forest. Aru Valley's meadow makes a gentle half-day, with trails you can follow for an hour or two and turn back from whenever you like. These walks also show you how you handle altitude, because Pahalgam sits at roughly 2,130 metres and some people feel it on the first day. Our Aru and Betaab guide has distances and timings.

Betaab Valley's level paths make an easy first walk.

The main treks, in plain language

One honest warning first. Operators quote different distances, durations and difficulty ratings for the same trek, so treat the figures below as ballpark and confirm the details with your guide.

Kolahoi Glacier. This is the classic Aru Valley trek. From Aru the trail climbs through Lidderwat towards the glacier at the foot of Kolahoi Peak, one of the highest mountains in the area, and Wikipedia has the background. Most operators run it over four to six days with camping, and July to September is the usual window. It is often rated moderate, but the altitude and distance make it a poor choice for a first-ever trek.

Tarsar-Marsar lakes. Another trek that begins at Aru and passes through Lidderwat, leading to two alpine lakes at roughly 3,900 and 4,050 metres. Expect six or seven days, camping and cold nights. June to September is the common season.

Sheshnag. This one continues beyond Chandanwari along the Amarnath Yatra route, roughly 11 to 12 km each way. The route is regulated during the pilgrimage season, and the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board describes the traditional Pahalgam route on its official site.

Tulian Lake. Often described as a shorter, gentler option, but it starts from the Baisaran side, so check that the route is open and permitted before you plan around it.

What a first trek actually needs

  • A local guide or registered operator. Don't wander off alone on glacier or lake routes.
  • Time to acclimatise. Spend at least a night or two around Pahalgam before going higher.
  • Layers. Mountain weather changes fast, and nights are cold even in summer.
  • Proper gear. Shoes with good grip, a rain jacket and a headlamp are the basics.
  • Some fitness. A few weeks of regular walking beforehand makes a real difference.
  • A backup plan. Mobile networks are patchy beyond town, so tell someone your route and return date.

For general mountaineering and safety information in India, the Indian Mountaineering Foundation is a reliable place to start. Permit and access rules can change, so confirm locally rather than relying on an old blog post, this one included.

When to go

June to September suits most multi-day treks near Pahalgam, and July and August are the popular months. The shoulder months can be lovely and quieter, but they are also colder. If you want help matching dates to your plans, see our guide to when to visit Pahalgam.

Resting well before and after

A trek feels better when there is a proper bed at both ends. Hotel Sparrow is in Kullar, a short drive from the main market and a taxi ride from Aru, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours, so early starts and late returns are not a problem. If you are planning a longer walk, tell our concierge early and we will help you arrange a guide, as described on our places to visit near Pahalgam page. After a day on the trail, dinner at the in-house restaurant, with Indian, Chinese, Continental and Kashmiri dishes, is a welcome finish.
