Pahalgam in winter is a different place. The meadows that glow green in June turn white, the Lidder runs quietly between frosted banks, and the town slows to a hush. It is cold, and some days are harder than others, but many travellers tell us it is the most beautiful season of all. Here is what to expect and how to be ready for it.

When the snow usually arrives

Snow typically falls between late December and February, the window we describe in our season-by-season guide to visiting Pahalgam. Heavy falls can come earlier or linger later, so treat any dates as a guide rather than a promise.

Wikipedia places the town at about 2,200 metres in the Lidder Valley, high enough for long, cold winters. The J&K Tourism Development Corporation points out in its Pahalgam overview that the town lies lower than Gulmarg, so night temperatures do not fall as far there. In practice, mornings and evenings are the coldest, while a sunny afternoon can feel surprisingly gentle.

What you can actually do in the snow

Winter here is about stillness rather than a packed schedule. Walk the quiet lanes near Kullar, stand by the river and watch the pines hold their snow, and spend an hour on the terrace with a hot drink while the peaks catch the late light. Photographers love the first two hours after sunrise, when the valley is clear and the crowds are absent.

The usual sightseeing spots, including Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, look dramatically different under snow. Keep one caution in mind: after heavy snowfall, the roads to higher places can close or become unsafe. Your driver and our front desk will know the situation on the day, so decide on the morning rather than the night before. Our 3-day Pahalgam itinerary is easy to rearrange around a closed road.

What to pack

Layers matter more than one heavy coat. Here is a list that has served our guests well:

  • Thermal base layers, top and bottom
  • A fleece or woollen mid-layer, plus a padded or down jacket
  • Waterproof boots with a good grip, and a spare pair of warm socks
  • Gloves, a woollen cap and a scarf
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, because glare off snow is strong
  • Lip balm and moisturiser, since the air is dry
  • A power bank, because cold drains phone batteries quickly; keep your phone in an inner pocket
  • A small bag for wet gloves and socks

Staying safe on snowy roads

Snow and ice change how a road behaves. Black ice forms on shaded bends, and a gentle slope can become a slide. Unless you have real experience driving on snow, let a local driver take the mountain stretches. They know where ice forms and when it is wiser to wait.

Travel in daylight, check road conditions before leaving Srinagar, and leave a spare day in your plan in case weather delays you. Our guide to Srinagar to Pahalgam by road describes the route so you know what to expect. Keep your phone charged and tell someone your plan.

Eating and warming up

In cold weather, hot food does a lot of the work. Kahwa is the classic answer. Wikipedia describes kahwah as green tea boiled with saffron, cinnamon and cardamom, sometimes with Kashmiri rose petals, and served with almonds or walnuts. It is fragrant, mildly sweet and very comforting after a cold walk.

Our ground-floor restaurant serves Indian, Chinese, Continental and Kashmiri dishes, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 10:00 AM and dinner from 8:00 to 10:30 PM. Our guide to Kashmiri food will help you choose.

Planning a winter stay

Late December is popular, so book early if you want a specific room. Ask for a mountain-facing Superior or Family Interconnected room if you want snow views from the window. When you book, it is worth asking about room heating and hot water so you know exactly what to expect. Travelling with children or parents? Our family guide to Pahalgam covers pacing and comfort.
