Most Pahalgam itineraries read the same way: Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari, repeat. Those places earn their reputation, but they also mean a lot of hours in a taxi. If you have a spare half day, the town and the river have a gentler side that rarely makes the list. Here is what we suggest to guests who ask what else there is to do.

Start with the Lidder River

You will see the Lidder wherever you go, so give it proper time. The river runs about 73 km from the Kolahoi Glacier to the Jhelum, and its two main branches, Lidder East from Sheshnag Lake and Lidder West from the glacier, meet close to Pahalgam, according to India's Ministry of Tourism. That is why the water here is so cold and so clear.

A simple plan works best. Walk along the East Lidder, past the golf course and on towards Laripora village, a route Outlook Traveller describes in its Pahalgam guide. Stop on a bridge. Sit with a cup of tea within earshot of the water. Keep children back from the edge, because the current is fast and the water is icy even in summer.

Can you go trout fishing in Pahalgam?

Yes, but not on a whim. The J&K Department of Fisheries states that angling is not allowed without a licence or permit, that the permit must be carried while fishing, and that only artificial fly fishing is permitted. Permits can be booked online, and the department's recent notices say stream sections, called beats, are allotted on a first come, first served basis.

The season opens in spring (it began on 1 April in 2025), and rules change, so read the department's current notice before you plan a trip around it. If fishing is the reason you are coming, tell our front desk early and we will point you in the right direction.

Rafting, when the river allows it

The Lidder is also known for rafting, and there is a rafting point near town in the warmer months. Whether it runs depends on water level and weather, so nobody can promise you a date in advance. Ask the front desk on the morning you want to go, check that the operator provides life jackets and helmets, and skip it if the river looks high.

Mamleshwar temple: fifteen unhurried minutes

Mamleshwar, also called the Mamal temple, is a small, old Shiva shrine beside a stream close to town. It is not a big stop, and that is its charm. Fifteen minutes is enough, which makes it an easy pause on the way back from a longer outing. Cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off, and keep your voice low.

Evenings in town

Pahalgam is not a nightlife place, and we like that. The small market is good for an evening stroll and a few souvenirs. Taxis and ponies work from fixed spots, so ask to see the posted rates before you agree to anything. If you play golf, the 18-hole course sits across the river from town. It is a warm-weather course, so check before you travel in winter.

If you want a plan to hang all this on, our 3-day family itinerary shows where these stops fit between the bigger day trips. Questions about phones, cash and altitude are answered in our Pahalgam travel tips.
