Where to Stay in Pahalgam by Comparing Kullar With the Town Centre and Aru Valley
October 30, 2026 · 4 min read
Most of us pick a hotel the way we pick a train seat: check the price, glance at the photos, book. In Pahalgam, that shortcut can cost you. The valley is long and stretched along the river, so the neighbourhood you sleep in shapes everything, from how much time you spend in taxis to whether your first view each morning is a mountain or a parked tempo traveller. Here is a straight comparison of the three usual choices, and why so many people searching for hotels in Kullar Pahalgam end up glad they did.
Pahalgam is a valley, not a single spot
Pahalgam sits at roughly 2,130 metres on the banks of the Lidder River, about 90 km from Srinagar and 2.5 to 3 hours away by road. The famous sights are scattered along the water. Aru Valley is about 12 km from town in one direction, while Betaab Valley and Chandanwari, roughly 16 km out, lie the other way. If you want the wider background, the Wikipedia article on Pahalgam is a handy start. The takeaway is simple: wherever you stay, you will be in a taxi most days, so choose a base that makes your evenings pleasant rather than one that merely sounds central.
Option one: the town centre

Staying near the market is the classic choice. You can walk to the taxi stand, pick up a woollen cap or a snack without arranging transport, and there are more places to eat within a few minutes. The trade-off is noise and crowds. From May to August, when hotels in Pahalgam fill up fastest, the centre gets busy from early morning, and the window of many rooms looks at the next building rather than the peaks. It suits people who want to be in the middle of things and don't mind the bustle.
Option two: Kullar

Kullar sits just outside the main hum. Hotel Sparrow is at Kullar Nagipora on BP Road, a short drive from the central market, with orchards around it and the mountains behind. You give up the five-minute walk to the shops, but a taxi covers that quickly, and most guests are out on day trips anyway. What you get back is quieter mornings, better sleep and views that feel like part of the holiday. If a calm evening matters more to you than being next to the stalls, this is the side of town to look at.
Our 33 rooms across four floors include Superior and Family Interconnected rooms that face the Himalayan peaks. You can see each one on our rooms page, or read how the views differ in Inside Hotel Sparrow.
Option three: Aru Valley
Aru is the opposite experience: open meadows, a stream, shepherd huts on the slopes and almost no commercial buzz. It is the starting point for the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar treks, so serious walkers often base themselves here. The catch is distance. Aru lies in the opposite direction from Betaab and Chandanwari, so a day out to those two means a lot of backtracking, and restaurants and shops are fewer. It is wonderful if walking is the point, and less so if you want variety.
A quick way to decide
- Want to stroll to shops and eat out every night? Choose the town centre.
- Want mountain views, calm evenings and easy taxi access? Choose Kullar.
- Planning a multi-day trek? Base yourself in Aru for a night or two.
- Travelling with children or parents? Quiet surroundings and a restaurant on site usually matter more than a walkable market. Our family travel guide goes deeper.
Questions to ask before booking any hotel in Pahalgam
Whatever area you pick, a few questions save disappointment later.
- Which way does my room face? Not every room has mountain views. At Hotel Sparrow, Superior and Family Interconnected rooms look at the peaks, while Deluxe | Premier rooms overlook the village, so ask for what you want.
- What meals are included? Some rooms come with breakfast and dinner, which helps when you return tired.
- Is the front desk open 24 hours? Road trips from Srinagar can end late.
- What about winter? Roads can close after heavy snow, so confirm access and check the forecast with the India Meteorological Department before you travel.
- How early should I book? May to August is the busiest stretch, so book well ahead.
Why guests pick Hotel Sparrow in Kullar
We are rated 4.5 on Google by 1,534 guests, and the things people mention most are the views, the quiet and the food. The ground-floor restaurant serves Indian, Chinese, Continental and Kashmiri dishes, with breakfast from 7:30 to 10:00 AM and dinner from 8:00 to 10:30 PM. The front desk works round the clock, and our concierge can arrange a driver for Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari. For a mountain-view hotel in Pahalgam that keeps things calm without leaving you stranded, that mix tends to work.
Quick answers
Is Kullar far from Pahalgam market?
No. It is a short taxi ride from the central market.
Do all hotels in Kullar have mountain views?
Not necessarily. Views depend on a room's orientation as much as the area, so ask which rooms face the peaks.
When should I book?
For May to August, as early as you can. Other months are usually easier, but earlier is always safer.
